*trumpet blare*

doing a lot of school work recently. mostly more sketching and refining of this hackafore collection, but also some collar samples and other such sewerey. as part of the collection, i was trying to make a hackafore crest in illustrator. here was the basic form i came up with, but as always, any helpful criticism is welcome. i'm not sure about the chinese to the right, but i was trying to find a couterbalance to the anchor on the left. i wanted something to continue the coastal/mountain dichotomy but couldn't think of a good mountain tool...

I always enjoyed the distinctively David-i-an bright, precise colors and ...organic (?) look of your work. So I dig how this is a departure from previous stuff, but at the same time it strikes me as a little too generic and overly-produced.
But I do like the concepts of earth and sea juxtaposition, but the vision gets muddled with the abundance of elements (including the script on the lower right) and colors.

i feel you on the misplaced authenticity vibe. this was the latest in an epic quest that is my search for proper heraldic representation. the chinese character did get worked out a bit -- apparently moving the "ma" portion into the radical position to the left helps with translation (as relayed by both japanese AND chinese students). in the end, vectorizing this bastard proved too daunting to complete at 4am -- what with the other 25 pages to get done. ah well, perhaps more refinement in the future!

it is quite the menagerie of heraldic animals. seems like the challenge is linking the emblematic filigree (the shield, crown, brooch, flagging etc) to the animals. the hackahorse should prob be largest. perhaps the bear and griffin will need their own brooches/shields, all entwined with.. uh.. more filigree? perhaps something natural to blend with the mountains / waves. which are awesome, by the way.

the characters and anchor may have to be background or much smaller. while epic conflations are hackaforian, it gets kinda hard to read visually.
