Odds and ends

Tying up some loose ends here in San Francisco!  Big moves and changes loom on the horizon, so here are some fun little frivolities in the mean time!

Oldies but goodies from my elementary school days -- gotta get those fresh ReeAirNik's of course!

Victor Copeland's Sacramento Firebirds' Home uniform set.  Luckily there's been some progression in my renders since I was 10 years old.  ...and yup, included IS a design for the latest in crotch cup technology :D

DeStijl Hoody in a blue colorway.  Trying to clear out the rolls of random fabric that have accumulated @ 440.  Included here are a poly mesh self, ripstop pocketing, stretch mesh rib and micro mesh liner.  Made in the U! S! A!

Merchandisers showing Hackafore some love @ 440.  Thanks to Megan, Krystle and Bo!

...and a couple East Asian prints for good measure!  The naughty Japanese schoolgirls are yelling out "Slackers!  Rude & Reckless!" while the Thai translates to "Immeasurable is this heart of Man."

Fresh coats of paint

In the middle of refurbishing my Senior Collection portfolio.  Updating both the flats and croquis -- trying to provide some more detail and information to the garments.  Here are the first couple looks:

More to come!

Nightmares

Doing some portfolio work, and wanted to get some extra practice in on technical flats and performance wear.  So, I decided to do a little basketball collection based on my UCSF rec league team -- the Nightmares.  A little co-branding with adidas to add that layer of authenticity, and here we go!

Vigons Football Club

A request came in from Umber & Ochre owner Kunal, to come up with some t-shirt designs for his son's soccer team "Vigons FC".  Kunal provided me with their existing logo and wanted to see what I could come up with. Since Kunal owns and operates some factories in India, I figured the sky was the limit, and tackled this thing head on!
Vigons' existing crest

Sketching out some ideas for revamping the crest.  The dragon looked a little too clip-arty for me, so I was excited to play around with the graphic opportunities a subject like a wyvern presents.  Also, the pooch in the corner was from a separate project -- Peasants & Travelers was making some pet beds and needed some mock-ups done :)

Trying some sketches in Photoshop with my Wacom.  Trying to capture the fluid twisting of the dragon.

Playing with a couple font directions.

Quick flats of some possible jersey directions.  With only the crest to go off, I wanted the jerseys to be fairly non-partisan.  Just mesh and pipping, thank you.

In the end, Kunal really only wanted patches sewn on some black Tshirts to sell to the parents.  O well, but we can do that too!

El Dorado

With the 49ers' recent success (Harbowl-bound!), the 440 Studio has been asking about the possibility of making some merchandise to capitalize on the recent increase in demand.  To answer the call, I quickly mocked up the following designs.  They evoke the spirit of the teams without infringing on any copyrights...

Classic miner iconography with the crossed pick-axes

Requested by the owner of 440

Left over from last year.  The store is located in SOMA and not Haight, so these might not fly...

Debating whether these would be printed (easier) or sewn (cooler)

...and finally, it's never too early to start getting ready for baseball season!  Vamos Gigantes y Pandito tambien!

I'll keep you updated as progress is made -- over this next week!  *eap!

So...what is it you'd say you DO here?

Inquiring minds have been asking, so Dave, now that you're graduated, what exactly are you doing with yourself?!  Why, working at the 440 Brannan boutique of course!  My school chums Gerhart and Kunal started their own fashion label named Umber & Ochre (website in development) and I've come on as the third wheel.  Here are some shots of the boutique / work space, as the storefront is a converted production factory:

Cutting table and some straight-stich machines

Light table and the Mens' Wear racks

Cutting saws and Art!

Yes, that's all very nice David, but what do YOU do?!  Glad you asked!  Bit of everything, as the business is a start-up.  Some pattern drafting and cutting...

some sample sewing / production...

a little graphic design...

lending a helping hand during sales...

...every once in awhile, doing some amateur entomology!  Found this little guy in a box full of samples.

and of course, offering to grab some lunch for the crew!  This is the (hour long; yes, a legitimately full hour long) lunch line for the Korean diner HRD.  The kimchi burritos and Mongolian cheesesteak sammies are TOTALLY worth it!

Welp, that's all for now folks!  Gotta go get ready for work -- big sales planned for today!

DCon 2012 - part I

Hey there!  Well after a grand old time last semester, I'm rejoining the fray with some new planned upgrades.
The theme is similar to last time, a solidly cyberpunk look  something to the tune of the sketch below?

As always, I'm a sucker for a nice exoskeleton....so we begin with the new spine!
I started in CAD, similar to last time, with the intention of "building out" from the last time.  More shiny!  More size/scale!  More lights!  So this time instead of traverse sections, we're going sagittal, baby.

Below is a chart showing the progress over the month or so of design changes.  Started with a more biological looking construction, but as you can see these didn't stack too well

So the simpler redesign around mid-June was neat, but didn't have the right complexity.  So I added ribs and metallic circuit-looking inserts into the segments.  Below is the final CAD that I used for cutting the parts and the plan for what it should look like.  The segments are hinged to to allow motion in the sagittal plane (e.g. up and down like a lizard in aggressive mode).

So now onto the fabrication!  Sections were cut and sandwiched with pieces of reflective coated polyester film (it's what's inside most astronaut suits to keep in heat).  Turns out it cuts beautifully on a laser cutter, while normal metal foils do not.

More shots of progress soon!
