wondercon

i know there's been a whole lot of this school stuff being posted, so i wanted to take a second to let you know it's not all academia out here on the bay. here's a little character work i was working on in preparation for another 8 page ashcan for wondercon distribution. i was reading some interviews with jeff campbell, and he was saying he got his start by sending out 8 page samples of splash pages, sequentials etc. it seemed the ashcan route would be prime for wonderconning with the pros -- a nice little something to show around that wouldn't be too bulky or cumbersome.
onto the story! the plan was to move bazooka boy away from the lighter slapstick of the last ashcan -- moving towards a little more will eisner. i've been pretty impressed with "the spirit" comics after downloading the lot of them through torrent. the blue suit with red tie uniform of the spirit seemed perfect for inverting into a red suit/blue tie for bb. from there, the ideas started battling for prominance. here's my plan: 8 pages printed in dark blue (instead of black)/white with sin city hints of the color red (mostly to distinguish bb). now the plot and page breakdown:
the first go-around for bb's drum circle of doom!














page 1. the cover. bb peeking through blinds at femme on street. smoke from cigarette forms title (one of my favorite spirit motifs!).
page 2. bb at office desk. femme comes in. bb offers a drink, she refuses, so he drinks hers.
page 3. femme slithers around bb, dropping a roofie in his (other) drink.
page 4. femme will have drink. they cheers.
page 5. this is where it gets fun! bb has passed out from the roofie, which turns out to be some pychadelic. now the blue/white coloring is joined by more red, leading to a disorienting, 3-d effect. bb come to, and random villain mastermind does monologue (as bb percieves villian in various halucinations...kinda like batman begins). bb breaks out of bindings.
page 6. fight. villian reveals he hired femme to drug bb. villian about to win.
page 7. femme returns and kills villian, saving bb. she's a bad girl; ends on femme suggesting some punitive actions...
page 8. either a pin-up or a fake ad. originally, the drugged bb would stumble into an in-n-out for a double-double. idunno about that. so, maybe reworking the drum circle splash from above?
