here and there

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, Dave!
Not a lot of art projects been going on lately, but certainly been trying to develop some new skills in the Making Things Techniques department. Here's a few shots of the pieces I've been making for research with the generous help of some fantastic and extraordinarily patient labmates. Ooh ooh and did I tell you we finally scored a grant for our work? Wheeeee! Now to get a publication out and I'll be the happiest kiddo.



1. Laser diode sleeve made from aluminum on CNC mill. You can see four small metal rods that slide into the sides to hold it into place. Not glamourous, but I wish you could feel the precision of the fit on it

2. Micromilling the mold for the devices I make. The material is a machining-friendly brass which cuts nicely without being too hard/sticky/soft/etc. Some progress shots (height of raised features is 0.75mm, dimensions of entire brass workpiece is 60mm wide by 25.4mm long).










your insect collection and the onset of summer have turned my mind to thoughts of lepidoptera :D these conveniently perched right outside my window and into a macro lens

and you know...just being the bomb at figure drawing, no big deal. damn.

o the sheer metallic snuggedness of it all! i'm picturing eviscerating lasers pulsating from the underside (under the 1549 label), while the topmost armature connects to some kind of person-encapsulating doom-bringing exoskeleton?! please please?! and are you f'ing serious...micromolding?! do you get to wear sweet magnifying goggles or some of those diamond-cutter glasses while you shear away the layers of brass? what is the device for? the plus signs would indicate conducting a current, but even in abstraction it's a marvelous bit of design work with the double pair of wishboning! and so small! i keep trying to tell the knitwear kids about microweaves, but they're not quite there yet...
