recently went on a mini-excursion to check out materials for the upcoming costume....i'm thinking about the following kinda breakdown:
1. outerwear hoodie thing: was thinking that to maintain the 'winter-y' feel should go with a warmer-looking fabric for the hooded part. midweight stretch fleece (~american apparel fleece hoodie
2. skirt: got a nicely draping cotton one from AA....long but breezy enough to be sufficient for a Wonder-ful April morn
Shoot I should buy my tickets already!
On the drawing front, haven't gotten to break out the pencils much lately and research has been maddening.
The usual suspects: taken to arranging these as such to track the progress of form perception better...this model had such a great abstract set of shapes comprising her form and picked some wonderfully innovative poses. Lots of interesting hand gestures and interactions with light.
More kudzu concepting...I showed the concept that I had been working on with the skull halves to one of the guys who wanted it to begin with, and he said there was a bit too much going on (which in retrospect I agree with). It's being streamlined down now to the main kudzu conceit, and I'm looking to integrate some more 'ruined industrial feel' kinda stuff with some railroad track vertebrae and rusty oranges buried like silent Southern secrets within the mysterious leafy depths of those vines...[upper right]. The posing of the figure has been troublesome though...I had started with a crouched figure to transition into a solid mass of vines, but it didn't seem to have the correct sense of "grace". Shape and layout has always been tough for me to decide on, maybe it's a good experience.
oh yeah, and here's the update to the water pump stuff....warmed up the palette and worked out more of the details on the render. Took me a few days away from it to realize that the screws on the left and right main pipes are horribly unbalanced, gotta work that out next...

bottom right is pretty. I want to touch...
Are you talking about wondercon or comicon?
laser cutting is the coolest! if you've got access to one, go crazy with it! i'm pretty sure our architecture dpt. has one as well, but they certainly don't advertise. as far as patterns go, here's a link to the basic pattern block (bodice and sleeve):

truth be told though, starting from scratch (unless you've got riki over your shoulder giving you pointers) is probably more labor-intensive than finding a blazer or jacket that you like and can then alter. attaching appliques (snowflakes, etc.) would be better done with double sided facing. this is the white, woven material used on the backs of iron-on patches (and can be found in most fabric stores). this allows you to iron the patch down, so it's flat and sticks through washings and wear.
holy jeeze! there's snow on your flickr account! inconceivable! your figure work looks stellar, although i'm sad the images are getting smaller and smaller :*(
ps. @ ivan: wondercon baby! you coming out west as well?!
OOO appliques, great idea!!
