Directions for the module were a little confusing. Our syllabus said we needed 2 images of garments, and the discussion prompt said we needed 1 image of a garment depicting the 6 functions of dress. I interpreted that to mean we needed 1 image that featured multiple garments depicting the various functions -- the alternative being a single garment that possesses all 6 functions, which seems contradictory (environmentally protecting, religiously significant AND sexually enticing? *does not compute*). Here are my two assemblages:
Dress functions:
1. Unbranded, woven hat. Protects wearer from UV rays as well as rainfall. Made in Asia -- China, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc.
2. Wild Ties brand Looney Tunes licensed necktie featuring Buggs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck. This is a decorative print on a garment possessing no functional-service. Made in the USA.
3. Made-in-the-UK brand false mustache. Helps define gender as "Male." Made in the United Kingdom.
4. Australian Staff Sargent uniform jacket, circa World War 2. The jacket identifies the wearer with the Australian armed forces and associated with other member of his rank. Can further be used to identify with Veterans groups. Made in Australia.
5. Farida's Passions branded Juti shoes. These are traditionally worn by the groom during his wedding ceremony. Made in India.
6. Speedo brand swim briefs. Worn as both functional swimming attire as well as casual wear associated with sun-bathing. When worn outside of the water, they provide sexual enhancement by focusing attention up the exposed thighs and settling on the barely covered genital region. The Speedo brand is American, but these particular briefs were made and distributed in Germany.
Dress functions:
1. Simms brand G4 Stockingfoot model fishing waders. These provide environmental protection in the form of Gore-Tex fabric blocking the permeation of water into the leggings. Made in the USA.
2. Givenchy multi-chain and charm necklace. This forms a decorative function and is based off of the style set by actor/wrestler Mr. T. Made in France.
3. New Generation Clothing printed BBQ apron. This defines gender roles as the male chef declares his rank as "Captain." Made in Canada.
4. Mitchell Ness reproduction of Wilson brand San Francisco 49ers jersey. This promotes group identity by aligning the wearer with the 49ers football team (to the exclusion of other teams). This is further defined, as belonging to the 1994 Super Bowl winning team, and the player Deon Sanders in particular. Made in the USA.
5. Shtreimel hat worn by married Jewish Orthodox Hasidic men during religious holidays / celebrations. Made in Israel.
6. Iced Out Gear brand gold-plated dollar-sign "Bling Rings." Intended to increase sexual appeal through the gratuitous display of wealth. Made in the USA.
