...not to mention a nice set of 'stems'
ho ho ho!
two concepts, one sketch. Went ambitious with the two figure...
trying to make the smoke look more like a 'rose'. Want to add in some BG elements, but not sure what to do, what to do....
suggestions?

those figures are really quite nice. good job with their interaction: they both have and maintain their weight well. the smoke...well, it doesn't really say "rose" to me yet. maybe you could swap the cigarette and the gun (so, cigarette in her left hand), which would give you some more room to work with on shaping the smoke. if you did that, maybe change the gun to a knife (it being more of a close-quarters weapon and poised to stab bazooka in the back).
for some inspiration, have a look at this flickr account:

some excellent old timey ads and older artwork in general. some nice compositions AND some feature the black/white/red color story. a little nsfw heads up tho...you know how scandalous some of those victorians can be.
I was thinking for the background of doing an art-noveau flat-color rose that could do a thorny border as well.
Thanks for the link! Those are some awesome inspirations. I like the idea of the knife, I think it would be cool if it were one of her hairstyle-y doobers.
like the smoke, keep the rose abstract, just add a couple more strokes. smoke should come out of the gun!
maybe could foreshorten their legs more. or less. or just cut them off..
legs, so difficult.
