dressed to the nines

huzzah! awesome to hear you got the go-ahead for the con! so when's your invisible jet set to land in this fair land of festive fanboys?

i started thinking it'd be pretty fun (and dare i say educational -- for me anyways) to make up some costumes for the con. i thought it'd be sweet to go as bazooka boy, so i've started scouting out the various pieces for the outfit (military surplus is like toys for grown-ups!).

getting geared up sounded like something you might be into as well, so i took the liberty of drafting up a costume design you might be interested in. i could stitch up the shirt in no time, and most of the other clothing could be picked up pretty easily at american apparel. the goggles and plastic wakizashi might be a bit trickier but i'm sure they could be found before the con.

let me know what you think or if you have any other costuming ideas... :D

Ooo I love these!!!
Really you're starting to get a really great sense of color and style in these. The skin tones work and the lines are all oh-so-precise and work well with the sharpness of the flat coloring.

I LOVE the idea of gearing up! I'd be honored to wear said T-shirt. How do you feel about going for a more "lived in" superhero feel? I was thinking we could put burn some holes in and rough em up a bit. I have a pair of sneakers that fit the bill and I'm all over white hot shorts like herpes on a dead hooker!
How do you feel about making the shirt into a deep V neck (http://store.americanapparel.ch/6456w.html#i)? I feel that would emphasize the shape of the "M".
Are you going to go for a BB emblazoned on the back of your shirt for identification? I like the design but I do worry about you being mistaken for one of the incredibles due to the all-red and mask. Their color scheme is red/white/black/yellow, so if you could somehow associate a different color in there it might break the subconscious association (say that nerf-orange that would be on your accessorized gun for instance). If you do need any nerf gun props I've got those at home in spades :>

Man this is shaping up to be a lot of fun! I've been learning quite a bit from doing this project. Sorry the artwork progress is so slow, there's a lot of stuff going on right now trying to finish up my thesis work before the start of the fall semester.

glad to hear you're excited too! good idea with the v-neck, that'd work well i think. i was at target today searching for props, but none of the swords they had came with scabbards. lame.

yeah...the incredibles totally stole my costume design. jerks. i'll come up with some updates and hopefully that will help clear things up. maybe some more pouches and nerf amo belts. all liefelded and scowlly! grrr!

liefelded? Dude you're going to need a bigger chestplate and more randomly placed muscles for that :P

Hey have you seen Wall-E yet? I highly recommend it. Those pixar guys know their design work...and their production quality in general is tight as a trebled gui-tar string

Until now the 'films-so-awesome-they-literally-make-me-cry' category has been occupied exclusively by Miyazaki, but this one joins that proud cabal.

could I write "otaku kira" (fanboy killer) on the back of my shirt?

Hey Mel,
I'm sorry I didn't get much of a chance to rap with you the other night. We need to catch up before SDCC for sure. Thanks for stopping by the blog:)

Peace,
Joe
