trying out some more coloring work here
I'm pretty happy with how these are turning out
went with a more structured background comp with this first one and I think it looks much more coherent now!
I wanted a cool sunbean effect, but I think it's just making it look muddled right now. Here it is without sunlight

Here's the cleaned up pencils and rescanned version of the thief picture that I'll be using as the base. Unlike the rider, this one has some nice pencil linework that I'm trying to retain in the final. I think I'll go with a painted look for the BG and then try an overlay of sorts to keep the lines.

played with a few whistles and bells in photoshop with the thief coloring. I like the textured roughness of adding a noise filter. Can you tell I'm a fan of yellows and greens?

a final one from today (too much staring at the screen...needed an old school media break.

ooh ooh ooh! the coloring is getting there! between the two, i really prefer the sunbeams shining through the water -- although the water itself kinda gets lost (particularly with the fish/rider). maybe a blue, shimmery layer over the whole piece? or a face in the background peering down into the pond/lake creating a size differential and showing how spritely the rider is?
your thief pic is also coming nicely. the overlay of the pencils should give some stronger weight to the figure and really help establish his presence/movement. the coloring on his coat makes it seem like he's wearing a leaf (dunno if that was the plan, but if not, i would...run with it! ha! ha!).
and goodness. the manually rendered smoker! i'm a sucker for white pencil on neutral/manila paper. the light of the ziggy and the definition on the face...quite nice. a suggestion for the marker fills, try not to break up your strokes unless you mean to. by using the differences made with multiple strokes you can start to purposefully define your shapes (kinda like the effect of crosshatching).
oh a background face--splendid idea!
indeed he's wearing a big ol lovely 'n dead autumnal leaf (one of the perks of non-California). In the future I'd like to do more pencil overlays, I'm sick of the too-smooth look of a lot of these other finished ones.
Good advice, good advice. Nice to have a seasoned pen veteran for such things.
