going crazy and mixing my mediums up! these are pastels over japanese inkbrush over watercolors over colored pencils. the watercolor stage was the primary for rendering, which proved a bit difficult; watercolor isn't the quickest of mediums for our short pose periods. still, turned out pretty well once i got done with inking and backgrounding them.
...and here are some of the samples worked out in muslin. the first is a long-sleeved bodice; the second is our 2nd dress (this time with bell sleeves! woohoo!).
for some reason I'd thought I gave praise to these a while ago, but had not (dah!) Which is inexplicable because i really really really dig these. The colors of the skin and the bg are perfect together. It's a way 'fine-arts'-y look that I've never seen you tackle before but it looks like you're really taking off with it!
Oo OO in other news I saw Don Hertzfeldt live last night! He premiered his new 20 min film and it was....beautiful. One guy doing a pure stop motion animation looks like it's quite the labor of love. Makes me all nostalgic for those days of the Spike and Mike animation fests at the LJ Museum of contemporary art....
a 20 minute hertzfeldt film?! like with a plot and everything? i'll have to keep an eye out to see if he's doing a showing here in the city. a couple indie cinema houses on haight i would imagine catering nicely to his crowd...
all that hand animation reminded me of richard williams' "thief and the cobbler." dunno if you heard of it; it was begun in 1964 (and never finished) with basically two guys doing all the animation and backgrounds (a truely hackafornian endeavour). some beautiful stuff in waaaay intricate oriental/arabic style... here's a google video link if you want to check it out:
