1. (trying to capture the "rising" aspect of the rising sun motif. i think it works pretty well, and isn't nearly as scandalous as some of the other drafts...)
2. (one of many samurai armour designs)
3. (based on one of those hecatonchires buddhas. i was thinking, jesus, how to represent a hundred hands? i went with a hundred pockets. my instructor was more fond of the pants -- a concentric corduroy design)
4. (my instructor was all like, "yeah, you kick ass at color, but if you took away the print, these would just be regular ol' bomber jackets." uh, yeah, and bomber jackets are sweet!)
5. (based on one of those huuuuuge buddha statutes)
so, with those 50 first drafts done (i stayed up watching the ENTIRE first season of "heroes" the night before they were due), now we've got to pick out 5 groups that are cohesive and formulate ANOTHER 50 designs that form collections. these are some of the ones that made the cut, but my instructor informed me that i wouldn't be able to use color on this new assignment. something about trying to get us out of our comfort zones. she also pointed out that my designs were a little too "costumey", meaning each component of the design was intended to match the others (she wants some more mix-n-matchidness). *sigh* well ok, i guess these new pov's are why i'm going to school in the first place.
how's atl? love fest/oktoberfest/dragon boat races are this weekend, leading to fleet week next week (craziness ahoy!). somewhere around all this is all hallow's...i was thinking uncle sam, but with this sweet beard i'm working on, i think i may steal brian's idea and go with magnum p.i. we'll see.

I really have to concur on your strength in color, the matches on the prints are fan-tastic, and the outfits are seriously well matched.
I love the idea of the hundred pockets and the texture of the items that you drew looks really cool!
As far as mix n match goes, I feel like with your tshirt exp, that shouldn't be a big deal? To me your implementation of 'costumey' design is the half that I'd not seen previously :P
Just got back from Austin on Tuesday, school is OK but unfortunately since i missed the start of the pay cycle I'm running on empty for the next couple of months :P (Might be time to call mom and dad again soon? Sigh...)
Lucky boy! SF is going to be crawling with excellent photo ops...I enjoy your artist's eyeballs
ooooh, acl! how was that?! i saw some pics of the gnarles barkley boys and that dave grohl guy on your facebook; looked like yet another fun year!
this weekend was jam-packed for me as well. i had figure drawing class saturday from 9-4, but i still was able to make it out to lovefest. i missed the parade portion, but civic center (and really all of downtown) was PACKED with folks in all kinds of get-ups. my sister's friends went wearing some old school roller skates with varying degrees of success (skates+beer=a sore bum). and like a bum, i forgot my camera -- it would've really helped with this mix and match assignment.
sunday was a bluegrass festival in the park. still crowded as all get up, but a little more relaxed than lovefest. i met up with a potential new roommate out there, actually. we went back for a house showing...that i'm trying hard not to jinx. the guy was super chill and the room...*guh*. it has its own bathroom AND shower, new kitchen appliances, and more space than i could shake a stick at. and oh the location -- 3rd and geary. right on the bus lines and between the bars/restaurants of geary and clement. filling out the application today and getting that back asap. only catch was a late october move-in. only a few more weeks on the couch...
Holy jeez that sound supersweet! Best of luck, Dave :D
Man that's a load of figure drawing. I hope you're keeping all them sketchbooks, I bet you're goin to be really pleased with the progress you'll be making (specially in these first few months)
